[edit] Synopsis
Keiichi Morisato is a college student living in a men's dorm. The night the story begins, he has been asked (told) by his dorm-mate and upperclassman Tamiya that he is to stay in the dorm and take his phone messages. He receives a message for Tamiya and tries to call him up at work, but accidentally calls the Goddess Technical Help Line and is almost immediately visited by Belldandy, who pops out of the mirror hanging on his wall.Belldandy explains to Keiichi that she is actually a goddess, there to grant him one wish. Thinking Tamiya set this up as a prank because of his bad luck with women, he jokingly wishes for a goddess like her to be with him always. The wish is approved by the system, and Belldandy makes a frantic call to The Almighty, who informs her that the wish has been made and it is too late to change it. Belldandy says that once a wish is made, it acquires a tremendous force, which no one can resist.
Soon thereafter, Keiichi's dorm-mates arrive and discover that he has a woman in the dorm. He and Belldandy are unceremoniously kicked out, and he discovers that Tamiya has fixed his motorcycle. Belldandy explains that this was the aforementioned system force at work.
[edit] Notes
- Otaki makes his first appearance in this chapter as well, but he is not mentioned by name.
- Many of the terms used later in the series (Goddess Relief Office, Ultimate Force, Yggdrasil system) are not mentioned here, instead going by other names. As I am reading a translated version of the manga, I don't know if this is an inconsistency in translation, or in the Japanese manga.
[edit] Analysis
People who have watched the OAVs and the TV Series will find this first chapter to be very familiar, save for a few small differences. Keiichi has a noticeably more foul mouth than he does in either of the other two releases (or, for that matter, later in the manga). The characters actually started out with somewhat different personalities, and it took them a while to grow and evolve into the characters we're used to. In the various continuity resets (again, the OAV and TV series), these changes have been 'back-ported' into the story.
Also very noticeable is the fact that the characters look vastly different from how they do now. Fujishima's drawing style has been constantly evolving since the manga began, although that evolution has slowed somewhat in later volumes. See Keiichi and Belldandy for good examples of this.
