[edit] Synopsis

Having just been kicked out of the men's dorm, Keiichi and Belldandy are now stuck outside at night with nowhere to go. Keiichi tries a number of his friends, but has no luck. Finally, they end up at the residence of an anime otaku named Sada. They find Sada's door unlocked, and Sada himself is engrossed in an a video.

Belldandy is initially overwhelmed by the sheer magnitude of Sada's obsession, and finally manages to distract him from his video long enough to talk to him. Sada sees Belldandy, but isn't quite out of his fantasy world, and reaches out to grope her, but Keiichi distracts him just in time. He then decides to show Belldandy one of his anime tapes, and touches her hand when he hands it to her. At this point, he decides he wants to kiss her. Belldandy, having used up all her power cleaning Sada's dirty kitchen, is unable to defend herself, but Keiichi again stops him at the last moment, this time by throwing his cassette tape player at him.

At that point, Keiichi decides it's time to leave. On their way out, Sada gives Belldandy an anime tape, saying he won't need it anymore. Having seen the wonders of a real woman, Sada gives up anime fandom and becomes a porno fan instead.

[edit] Notes

  • In this chapter, we discover that Belldandy's goddess markings (which are smaller at this point than they are in the current manga) enlarge when she is surprised. This particular detail doesn't appear to stand the test of time, and is forgotten in the later manga.
  • Sada is the first of a number of characters who show up only for a short time and are never seen again.

[edit] Analysis

There are a couple of interesting pieces of character development in this chapter. The first is when Belldandy mentions that she had never had anything before that she could devote herself completely to. Keiichi asks her if she does now, and she blushes happily. It's clear from this that, despite her initial consternation, in the few short hours after the wish, she has warmed to the idea of being with Keiichi forever.

The other interesting point is that we get to see that Keiichi is both quick on his feet and very protective of Belldandy, deftly heading off both of Sada's advances on Belldandy, first with a carefully timed observation, and then again with force.

[edit] Legend's review

This episode is mostly a one-off story about a character who never shows up again, but if you look closely there are some interesting character developments between Belldandy and Keiichi. Art style is the same as in Chapter 1, but the characterizations are already starting to improve. All in all, not as good as many of the late chapters, but definitely worth the read.
