[edit] Synopsis

The Trials of Morisato is a three part story arc that can be found in the manga novel The Queen of Vengeance. Part 1 is unnamed, Part 2 is entitled "Urd's Fantastic Adventure", and Part 3 is dubbed "Belldandy's Tempestuous Heart".

[edit] Part 1

In Part 1, everything is fine and dandy as usual, at least for the first page. As you'll recall the Lord of Terror incident left Yggdrasil crashed and out of commission. Now we begin to see the full effect of the crash. Keiichi finds Belldandy asleep, Skuld devouring ice cream, and Urd consuming sake at a rate that would even make a frat guy jealous. What in the world could be causing this?! Well, it turns out that Yggdrasil converts energy from nature into a usable form for the goddesses on earth. Since the OS is down, that whole process is kaput. So, the goddesses revert to their alternative energy sources, i.e. sleeping, eating and drinking. Not only is this chaotic for Keiichi, but it's also a heafty financial burden. To make matters worse, this energy fluctuation causes the goddesses' Emblem Programs' to go haywire. Urd gets smaller, Skuld grows, but Bell stays the same. Now, how about going to fix this you may ask? After Keiichi receives a hint from a palm reader, with a little help from The Almighty, the problem becomes elemental.

[edit] Part 2, Urd's Fantastic Adventure

In Part 2, K gives the moon rock to Urd. Unlike Skuld, who reverted back to her normal form completely, Urd is only slightly returned to normal. So, K's gotta figure out what happened in production to cause this. Meanwhile, instead of moping around, Urd uses some kid's cloths that Keiichi got her to go out. She doesn't make it too far without collapsing. A little boy comes to her rescue, and she gives him a strange request...sake. After obliging her, the boy, Shohei Yoshida, becomes a bit smitten with Urd. In typical Urd fashion, she tries to break Shohei out of his shell by giving him some kindness and self confidence. After these two have a wonderful time, K figures out how to get the moon rocks to optimal form and Urd has to come with terms that it's time to return to her normal form. For Shohei, it's all "ichigoichie"...each moment, only once.

[edit] Part 3, Belldandy's Tempestuous Heart

Then comes the stories from the Playboy Mansion, a.k.a. part 3. Scandalous! Not really, but this one of the funniest episodes for a reader (poor K). Anyway, Keiichi is able to figure out the whole moon rock thing and produces them as bracelets for the goddesses. Typical Urd shows her appreciation with an ungrateful comment, but Bell reassures K that Urd just has a hard time expressing her gratitude. And we think that's the end of it until, knitting. Urd feels indebted to K, and is trying to figure out how to repay him. Unluckily, she spots Bell knitting, which drives her nuts. So, she taps into her Cupid personality again, and brews up a little some'em some'em. As if that wasn't selfish enough of Urd, she even used today's paper to line her table with to put her chem equipment on. Who could need that right? Skuld comes looking for it and finds it. She does her magician impersonation and ends up spilling it all. After a little quick thinking and too much X-20, she's able to hide her meddling from Urd. Then, Urd is able to sneak her potion to Bell, and Skuld can't say a word. After no immediate reaction from Bell, Urd walks away confused, but something happened. What followed can only be described as Bell acting sultry, and K, once again, showing no spine. Like any good chemist, Urd performed her daily inventory only to find that she was short a few things...not good. After she figures out what happened and confronted Skuld about it, she calculates what exactly she gave to Bell...even more not good. Once again, we are treated to another touching moment between K and Bell, there is a happy ending, no one gets any, and Skuld's punishment is absolutely hysterical.

[edit] Notes

  • More is revealed about the link between Yggdrasil and the goddesses. We learn about its energy conversion importance.
  • Bell explains how the symbols on their foreheads aren't just decoration, they're emblem programs.

[edit] Analysis

After K figures out that moon rocks are the solution (though Bell knows it was The Almighty that dropped a huge hint), he gets placed in an interesting position. He has power over the goddesses. All sing his praises and that sort of thing! We don't see him acting as a crutch for the sisters that often.

Then once again, we are called to witness Urd's tampering in Bell and K's relationship. Unlike Peorth, who either seems to understand better or is more patient, Urd is trying to get this relationship sprinting before it's even crawling. Peorth at least starts K off with trying to say "I love you." It's not so much that Urd wants to help, it's that she's pushing for something that is obviously completely outside of Bell and K's comfort level.

[edit] Redstar7's review

First, after seeing the anime take on this arc, I would recommend the manga version. The story flows better, there's more information, and there are some great illustrations by Fujishima, like when Urd confronts Skuld about tampering with her potion. Though these three chapters may seem like business as usual, I think parts 1 and 2 are quite worthwhile. Skuld develops beyond just a jealous sister, and a more innocent and playful side of Urd is seen. Part 3 is just plain fun and humor. And again, Skuld's punishment is still one of my favorite moments.
